At Autumn Mist Farm have been raising Highland Cattle since 1998. We currently have 9 brood cows, two yearling heifer, and 3 calves. Our cattle orginated from Sunset Farm, Maple Lea Farms, Bean Falls Farm, Deerwood Farm, and Lost Nation Farm. We feel that our cattle have a diverse background in genetics. They trace back to Scottish folds such as Cullerne, Glengorm, Cladich, Douneside, Esk, and Balmoral.
We have been exclusively using Artificial Insemination on our herd for the last 10 years. We currently have over 30 different sires in our LN tank. We have used sires such as Jock of Glengorm, Alasdair Ruadh of Cladich, GOF Broadstone, Rioghail of Balmoral, GOF Beau Geste, Maple Lea Grand Duke 50G, Gusgurlach of Windrush, and others. Please contact us if you have any questions about Artificial Insemenation or visit our sires page to view the sires that we are currently using.
This past year we have started and Embryo Transfer program on our farm. We selected our top three foundation cows and are working with different sire matings and flushing these cattle. We have also purchased embryos from other farms and have 100% scottish embryos stored in our tank.
The goals of our breeding program are to raise superior beef cattle where the cows are able to wean a calf each year. All of our cattle have to have sound feet and legs to remain in the herd along with superior udders. We also look for cows that have excellent milking abilities, which is shown in the calves they wean. In the sires we use and the heifers we retain in our herd we select for growth, as Highland Cattle are a beef breed and we do sell sides of beef. Another trait we select for is for all of our cattle to be quiet and docile allowing any member of the farm to work with them. We want all of our cattle to be very functional with minimal to no assistance from us that hold true to the breed characteristics.
